Poem 1
Loving In My Generation
By Taylor Marie Contarino
we don't say how we feel
and we don’t communicate openly
we don’t talk about the stuff that is real
and deep down, we feel brokenly
but I yearn for something else, hopingly.
we let fear overtake us and we run away
losing people that we love, that’s the price that we pay
seeing each other, not knowing what to say
ignoring each other, though we pass each other every single day.
we go from knowing everything about someone's life
to feeling pain and strife
when we look them in the eyes
knowing deep down, they were our demise
we don’t use our words
or say how we actually feel
because love could lead to heartbreak
and that's something with which we don’t wanna deal.
we remove each other from stories
we want to make a point
and we block each other on social media
although our souls once were joint
we go from being ingrained
in each others lives
to telling our friends lies and lies like
Girl, I'm fiiiiiiine.
we're afraid of words
because we don’t want to give too much of our selves.
we put our feelings on a shelf.
when deep down, our souls are crying for help.
You know, Drake once said,
“We live in a generation of, not being in love, and not being together
But we sure make it feel like we're together
'Cause we're scared to see each other with somebody else.”
maybe love would be a whole lot less hard
if we stopped playing games
and stopped misplacing blame
started taking accountability
stopped playing with each other hearts like monopoly

Poem 3
Poetry (???)
By Taylor Marie Contarino
you don't know what love is
and i don't know how to fix the
hitch in my throat
that arises when i try to define it
you don't know what affection is
and i don't know how to be with you if you
can’t deliver on false promises that you
promised when you were in a good mood
you don't know what
patience is
and you dont understand when
i tell you about my anxiety
and i can't be with someone who can't be patient with me
because i can't be with someone who can't even notice it
when i'm putting my heart on my sleeve
and working so, so, goddamn hard just to achieve
reassurance from someone who doesn’t know how to love someone properly.
and you still text me
and i still reply
because i’m still working on being strong
and i know what i deserve
I know its a learning curve
and i know i'll get there
because i deserve the sun, the stars, the moon, and the universe
but you can't even give me you.
there are a multitude of forces in the universe from wind to earth to fire to water
and you cant even give me time.
Poem 4
Thorns On A Rose
By Taylor Marie Contarino
Thorns On A Rose
I can't believe I thought you were different
You turned around and proved me wrong
Can't believe I thought I could change you
You were never gonna change all along.
You don’t know accountability
Who’s gonna call you out?
You don’t know responsibility
Someone’s gotta air you out
You act like I can trust you
But you do nothing to prove it
Every time I think you gain it
You fuck around and lose it
I don’t even let love in like that
You think you a player- Nah, you just up to bat.
You think you could bag a bitch
But I know you just wanna hit.
I can't believe I thought you were different
You turned around and proved me wrong
Can't believe I thought I could change you
You were never gonna change all along.
I saw the red flags
But I ignored all the signs
I wished them away
Like thorns on rose vines
I let my guard down
Gave you the benefit of the doubt
I thought you had morals
But you prioritize your clout.
And I’m not mad that I have a soft heart
I’m just mad that I let you in & it's tearing me apart.
& I’m just mad I stayed on the phone with you for five hours
Making you feel like you have some power
& I’m just hurt that I keep going in circles with myself
Morals, ethics, I pushed them to a shelf
For the sake of giving you my trust
And with that, all I was rewarded with was lust.
I can't believe I thought you were different
You turned around and proved me wrong
Can't believe I thought I could change you
You were never gonna change all along.
